Best Free Granular VST Plugins in 2026

Five granular plugins you can still get without paying today — with the important version, platform and development-status caveats that old free-plugin lists often miss.

Free status and compatibility verified on August 29, 2026.

Short answer

Start with GRN Lite. Choose Emergence 0.3 when you want more depth.

Free granular plugins are unusually sensitive to stale recommendations. A plugin may still be downloadable while its current version is paid, its macOS build is obsolete, or development has stopped entirely.

Best current all-round free pick

GRN Lite

Current, actively maintained, cross-platform and intentionally easy to learn.

Best deep free granulator

Emergence 0.3

A legacy free branch with multiple grain streams and substantially more direct control.

Best free macOS one-knob effect

Vortix Raw

A current granular vortex for quick rhythmic texture and glitch on macOS 15+.

Best legacy experiment

Ribs

Deep and unusual, especially on Windows, but development is suspended.

“Free” below means the listed version is currently obtainable without a required purchase. It does not mean every newer edition from the same developer is free.

GRN Lite

by FRCTL Audio

GRN Lite turns incoming audio into granular textures through seven character modes and two macro controls. It uses the same core grain engine as the paid GRN while keeping the free workflow intentionally simple.

Official GRN Lite page

Best for

The easiest current free granular effect to recommend first

  • Current VST3, AU and CLAP builds across all three major desktop platforms
  • Seven granular character modes with Amount and Mix controls
  • Commercial use is allowed and the developer states the Lite edition is free forever

Formats

VST3 / AU / CLAP

Platforms

Windows / macOS / Linux

Important caveat

The Lite edition is deliberately macro-driven. Direct grain size, density, spray, pitch and deeper modulation controls live in the paid GRN.

02Legacy free version · still officially available

Emergence 0.3

by Daniel Gergely

Emergence 0.3 is the older free branch of Daniel Gergely’s real-time granulator. It continuously records incoming audio into a buffer and can generate layered textures through multiple grain streams and modulation.

Official Emergence page

Best for

Deep free real-time granulation with multiple grain streams

  • Four grain streams for layered granular processing
  • Pitch quantization, stereo processing and random modulation in the free 0.3 branch
  • Useful when you want more direct granular depth than a two-knob free effect

Formats

VST3 / AU

Platforms

Windows / macOS

Important caveat

The current Emergence 1.x line is paid. Version 0.3 remains free, but it does not include newer 1.x features and is no longer the main actively developed branch.

03Free forever · current Raw edition

Vortix Raw

by Remi Blaze

Vortix Raw exposes the granular engine behind the paid Vortix through one SWIRL macro. It moves from light texture toward tape-like degradation and full glitch while remaining tempo-aware.

Official Vortix page

Best for

One-knob rhythmic granular movement on macOS

  • Fast one-control workflow for granular texture and glitch
  • Signed and notarized Universal Binary for current Intel and Apple Silicon Macs
  • A useful free entry point into the larger paid Vortix granular sequencer workflow

Formats

VST3 / AU / Standalone

Platforms

macOS 15+ · Apple Silicon + Intel

Important caveat

This is currently a macOS-only recommendation and requires macOS 15 or later. Windows and Linux users should choose another option on this list.

04Free · development suspended

Ribs

by Hvoya Audio

Ribs is a deep granular instrument and effect for recording incoming audio into buffers, building polyphonic textures, scratching, rhythmic slicing and destructive sound design.

Official Ribs page

Best for

Experimental granular sound design on a legacy free plugin

  • Much deeper experimental control than most lightweight free granular effects
  • Can operate as a synth, effect and standalone sound-design tool
  • Still downloadable for free, but should be treated as a legacy recommendation

Formats

VST / AU / Standalone

Platforms

Windows / legacy macOS support

Important caveat

Hvoya Audio explicitly says development is suspended. The developer describes the Windows build as fully functional but warns that newer macOS versions may not run it reliably.

05Free · open source GPL-3.0

STTR

by ManasWolrd

STTR is a small experimental granular effect centered on short-time reversal, window shaping and formant/pitch-like transformations. It exposes fewer traditional grain controls than a full granular synth.

Current KVR product listing

Best for

Open-source granular and short-time spectral experiments

  • Free and open source under GPL-3.0
  • Cross-platform VST3/AU/LV2 availability is listed for Windows, macOS and Linux
  • Distinct short-time reversal and window-shaping approach

Formats

VST3 / AU / LV2

Platforms

Windows / macOS / Linux

Important caveat

This is an experimental 0.1-era tool rather than a polished all-purpose granular workstation. Choose it for unusual processing and open-source access, not for a preset-heavy beginner workflow.

What “free” actually means

Check the version, license and operating system — not just the price tag.

Current free edition

GRN Lite and Vortix Raw are current free editions connected to actively sold product families. They are the easiest recommendations to keep current.

Legacy free branch

Emergence 0.3 is still officially free, but it is not the same product generation as the paid Emergence 1.x branch.

Suspended development

Ribs is still useful and downloadable, but the developer explicitly warns that development is suspended and newer macOS versions may be problematic.

Experimental open source

STTR is useful when source access and unusual processing matter more than a polished preset workflow or broad beginner documentation.

Want zero-install granular synthesis?

The browser tools on GranularSynth are free too. Load a file or record a sample, change grain size, density, position, spray and pitch, then record the processed result without installing a plugin.

Free granular VST FAQ

Questions before downloading a free granular plugin.

What is the best free granular VST plugin right now?+

GRN Lite is the easiest current starting point because it is actively maintained, supports VST3, AU and CLAP across Windows, macOS and Linux, and keeps the granular workflow simple. Emergence 0.3 is a stronger choice when you want deeper free grain-stream control.

Is Emergence still a free granular plugin?+

The current Emergence 1.x version is paid, but Daniel Gergely still officially provides the older Emergence 0.3 branch for free. The free branch lacks newer features from the paid version and is no longer the main development line.

Are free granular VST plugins safe to use in commercial music?+

Licensing varies by plugin. GRN Lite explicitly allows commercial use without attribution. For every free plugin, check the developer’s current license before distributing music, presets, software bundles or derivative code.

Which free granular VST works on Linux?+

GRN Lite supports Linux through VST3 and CLAP, and STTR is listed with Linux LV2/VST3 support. Always confirm the current build and host compatibility before installing because plugin packaging can change.

Why is Ribs listed if development is suspended?+

Ribs remains a capable free granular sound-design tool and is still officially downloadable, especially for Windows. It is included with a clear legacy warning because newer macOS compatibility is uncertain and active development has stopped.

Can I use granular synthesis without installing any VST?+

Yes. GranularSynth provides a free browser granular synthesizer and granular sampler. You can load or record audio, change grain parameters, hear the result and record processed output without installing a DAW plugin.
